The 43rd edition of the BBVA Torelló Mountain Film Festival is the one that has received the most proposals throughout its history, surpassing the record of 2019. A total of 176 films from 31 countries, which continues the growing post-pandemic trend of a cinema that exhibits creativity and quality in this year's selection. Of these, 49 productions from 18 countries have been chosen to be those that will be screened in the competitive section of the Festival.
In this edition, the presence of female directors continues to grow with 33% of the roster, a figure far from optimal but that is increasing every year, demonstrating the importance of female voices in mountain cinema. One of them, Polish filmmaker Eliza Kubarska who won several awards at the Festival, will present The Last Expedition, precisely about a pioneer among pioneers, the true story of the legendary Wanda Rutkiewicz, the first woman to climb the highest peaks on earth.
This year's Festival will also enjoy a greater presence of directors and protagonists who will present their films, up to twenty will visit Torelló, along with the celebration of several world and national premieres. Particular stories such as that of Pere Casanellas, a catalan who has established himself in Switzerland for decades and a prolific and singular mountaineer, whose life we will know in person and on screen, make up the usual mosaic of experiences and perspectives that feed the mountain soul of the screens of each edition.
The Caucasus, in its Georgian part, will focus the gaze of the opening show, the image and other elements of the program. A mountain range with an ancestral tradition of mountain peoples who live a very particular culture. Territory disputed by great empires throughout history, with many languages, alphabets and religions, influenced by and product of all this historical background. In this year's image, designed once more by Íngrid Picanyol, Torelló appears in the different Georgian alphabets and languages, against the silvery background of the Caucasus Mountains. An inauguration that will feature singing, dancing, the mountains and above all, the people of this territory.
